What Does Hail & Wind Roof Damage Look Like On Your Home?

Hail damage on a roof can appear differently depending on the severity of the storm and the type of roofing material. Here are some signs of hail and wind damage on a roof:

Dented or Cracked Shingles

Hail can cause shingles to crack or become dented, which can lead to leaks and further damage if not addressed. This is called impact damage. That’s when hailstones hit the roof with significant force, causing dents, cracks, and other types of impact damage to roofing materials such as shingles, tiles, and metal roofs.

Missing Granules

Hail can knock off the protective granules on asphalt shingles, leaving them exposed to UV rays and other environmental elements. This granule loss can lead to deterioration and leaks in the roof.

Bruises or Indentations

Hail can leave bruises or indentations on the surface of shingles, which can weaken them and cause them to deteriorate more quickly.

Cracked or Broken Tiles

Hail can also crack or break tiles on a tiled roof, which can lead to leaks and further damage. If water is able to penetrate, it will cause further water damage to the interior of the home and roof tarping may be a necessary step.

Weakened Sealant

The impact of hailstones can cause the sealant that bonds shingles or tiles to the roof to weaken, which can cause them to loosen and come off over time.

Soft Spots

Hail can cause soft spots in the roof, which can be a sign of water damage and may require repair or replacement.

The severity of the damage depends on the size, density, and speed of the hailstones, as well as the condition of the roofing material. It’s important to have your roof inspected by a professional roofing contractor after a hailstorm, even if you don’t see any visible damage. Liberty Remodeling and Restoration will be able to determine the extent of the damage and recommend the appropriate repairs. Remember, some damage may not be immediately visible and can lead to more significant problems if not addressed promptly.
